• As a general rule, the majority of cases in the ED will fit into the requirement of the Coroner's act for mandatory reporting
• Under no circumstances should a doctor allow him/herself to be persuaded not to report a valid case

• The death must be reported as soon as possible
• The doctor has an obligation to advise the Coroner of the most likely cause of death

• State Coroner  (24hr line)  - ph 8204 0618

During hours (0800-1800 - weekdays 0800-1600 - weekends)

• Coroner's office will take verbal report (or will use their faxed proforma)

After hours

• The police will take a brief report
• If the death may be due to a criminal act, then detective and forensic teams will be notified. 
• The Coroner's office staff will then contact the doctor the next day for a full report
